Sony has announced the first entry in the next generation of consumer-level blue-laser DVD recorders that utilizes the blu-ray technology.
Blue lasers have a shorter wavelength--405 nanometers compared to around 650 nanometers on DVD systems--and that means the laser beam can be focused onto a smaller area of the disc surface. In turn, this means less area is needed to store one bit of data and so more data can be stored on a disc. How much data? Between 23 and 27gb. Sounds great. But that will come at a price, somewhere in the vicinity of $3,815. But like most new technologies, I'm sure that price will drop rapidly.
When blue laser players become somewhat standard, think of the DVD packages you could have waiting under your tree. All six Star Wars episodes on one disk perhaps? Or how about the entire Lord of the Rings series without having to swap disks?. That will certainly free up some space on your DVD shelf.
