Gary Rydstrom, the legendary sound designer at Skywalker Sound who has worked on over 70 films while also finding time to invent THX Surround EX, is leaving the plush confines of George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch for the equally plush confines of Pixar Animation Studio.
Having worked as the lead sound designer on all of Pixar's features and most of their short films, Rydstrom formed a strong relationship with John Lasseter who in turn offered Rydstrom the opportunity to develop and direct a feature length animated comedy at Pixar.
Here's a nice interview with Rydstrom from Mix Magazine where he says:
See, there's another lesson for people. I left film school and it took me a mere 20 years to get a directing job.Who wouldn't pass up a chance like that?
