Here's a little tip for those users of the new Adobe Premiere Pro. After you've imported DV footage into your project and begun editing, you will obviously preview your creations on the timeline. When I first started using Premiere Pro a month or two ago, I was puzzled why the audio never seemd to playback. When I would scrub the playback head back and forth, I could hear the audio, but during playback... nothing.
A little poking around in the preferences and project settings revealed the problem. By default, Premiere Pro wants to playback audio out through your DV hardware. This works great if you're patched to a set of monitor speakers via a mix board hooked into your DV device. But in my case I was just previewing through my computer speakers, which meant I needed to tell Premiere to use my computer's sound card instead.

To change this setting, select Project > Project Settings > General > Playback Settings. Under Audio Playback, select the "Play Audio on Audio Hardware" radio button. Then click OK.
Edit away!
I just loaded Premiere Pro and I have the problem mentioned above, but I still have no playback audio. I even have my dv camera and speakers set up for playback through them, but still nothing. I went back into Premiere LE and my clips play fine, so it must be a setting that I'm missing in Pro. Have tried all of the playback settings but nothing. Clips show waveform in timeline. In LE, the monitor or sequence window had an audio button to mute audio. Is there something like that in Pro. Any help would be appeciated.
Try this: disconnect your DV camera from Firewire and then preview the timeline. Also, are you previewing the timeline by pressing enter (Premiere will render transitions and effects) or by simply tapping the spacebar?
Thanks for the response. I'm still not having any luck. I tried what you suggested but still no audio. I do get some popping and buzzing sounds. I don't even get any audio from the project window when I play a clip. I'm using a Gigabyte MOBO with intergrated sound, and I noticed in the preferences/audio hardware that "Adobe default windows sound" is the only option available. In the "Output channel mapping" box my Advance AC97 chipset is listed. I have no problem with audio in my previous version of Premiere.
I also noticed under the "Project Settings/General" that most of the items are grayed out, like the Editing Mode and Timebase. When I open a new project, I always choose DV but these settings are always ghosted out when I check under general settings.
Thank you so much for your post. You just saved me several hours of frustration.
Very much appreciated.
thanks Steve - the only hit with Google search for this problem, now solved
Chris
Wow, Thanks alot! I had lost all hope, Without you I would be dead, my project is due tommorrow!
no luck! I have canopus dvstorm dv hardware loaded and when I open project>general
editing mode and timeline are ghosted. When I select Playback settings I get a window titled Canopus Realtime DV playback settings and it looks NOTHING like your screen capture. There are no options to select the audio output device?!?
Thank you, Steve! I skimmed the Premiere Pro manual, software help, Adobe site, analog capture device manual, and a 'For Dummies' book, before finding the answer on your site was the first place. What a relief! Bye, bye frustration--Hello productivity!
Hey, I seem to not be the only one with the audio problem...although helpful suggestions I'm still at square one. Could the file format have something to do with why Pro cant play it? Any help would be much appreciated
Hey there, is there a compatibility issue between the canopus dv storm 2 and the adobe premiere pro 1.5 or not? I have been looking through several different forums and some people seem to have success while others--myself included--have either sporadic success or none at all.
A puzzlement.
Thanks.
Thanks so much for the post. You save me lots of time.

All of the sudden, my Panasonic DVC Pro (D230H) has stopped recording my projects. Just as a test, I tried the XP Windows Movie Maker and had exactly the same results. It does all the pre-things, like finding the TC to begin recording, preroll and actually goes into record/play for about 2 seconds. It then stops and in WMM, I get an error. Premiere just sits there until I hit ESC.
Thank you very much!! I have resolved my problem in few seconds after reading your adviced.
Cheers
I just wanted to say thanks, this was the first hit when I googled no audio in premiere pro playback and solved my problem in 30 seconds. I figured i'd spend the extra time i would have wasted looking for a solution writing you a note of thanks.
Sincerely,
Brian
I still have the same problem. This solution has not been useful for me I'm afraid.
I am still having this same exact problem as well. I tried the suggested settings. I even have my camera plugged in to pump the audio threw that. Rendering the movie and playing it with Windows Media Player yields no sound. Same with After Effects. I tried unplugging the camera from the firewire and the problem still exists.
Hello, Tried following you directions but it's not working. I'm importing a file that I have already captured. So I'm trying to edit the video and in the editing process I'm still not getting any sound.
Please Help,
Don
I am using XP with Premiere 6.0 and Pinnacle DV500 Plus. I can capture audio & video perfectly with my digital camcorder, but with my analog camcorder I cannot hear the audio. It's there, but I can't hear it anywhere. Can you help???? I tried the tape through the TV and I CAN hear the audio there.
a soultion to Premiere Pro DV Audio Playback Error
Using Adobe Premiere pro, I had audio problems whenever I played back a sequence on the DV hardware. Hence, I could not successfully copy my completed project to a DV Tape deck nor a DVD Deck. My first solution was to export the sequence to a DVD using my DVD burner - A process which took about 12 hours for a 1 hour Video project.
Eventually after experimenting with Premiere, I played the sequence in the source monitor and it worked. I had no audio problems and the playback was stable. Try this method if you were having the above mentioned problem and let me know if it works for you as well. Or, let me know if you have another solution.
PEACE!!!

Hi! I would really appreciate it if I could get some help here... 'Cause I'm going out of hope. I can't get the audio from my DV's clips to work correctly in my Premiere Pro. I always get static sound when I'm editing and after I render all the information it's still static! This is really annoying the heck out of me. I have checked the clips many times using other playing devices and there's nothing wrong with the audio, only when I open them on Premiere Pro. The audio rate is also compatible with my project settings. So, I really have no idea of what might be wrong. Help... Please?!
Thank you soooo much for the tip. I was so confused why it wasn't playing sound, but would so when scrubbing. I was thinking, darn do I have to re-install the software again!!!!!!
Keep up the excellent tips !!!!
I have the new DVX-E1 from Canopus, and i have the same problem, no sound in Premiere PRO. I only have sound in the preview monitor (left one) when i look at wmv clips or something, but when i place them on the timeline i have no sound anymore for that clip.
The option suggested above I can not use because that dialog box is completely different on my system. I do not have the options shown in the screenshot above. I suppose this is changed by the Canopus plugin ....
Switching to Edius Pro 3.0 ...
OK. Six hours trying to figure this out and I finally got a solution that worked for me and might for those who have tried this and failed to fix your problem.
The problem for me was that some of the files, specifically the ones imported from my HandyCam would not play sound in the timeline/sequence. However it worked fine in the source view.
The problem turned out to be that my codecs were all screwed up. So I downloaded the latest codecs from K-Lite...
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
and bam! it works like a charm. I would certainly appreciate an email if this solution worked for you because I spent forever trying to figure it out.

Take care and happy editing.
I had the combination of the Panasonic AJ-D230H (DVCPro deck) and YAD230 (IEEE Card) working in capture and export for some time using the top IEEE connector on the YAD230 with Adobe Premiere 6.0 and then 6.5, but for some reason, it stopped recording the audio. I even tried several different IEEE port combinations.
Finally, I upgraded to Premiere Pro v1.5 in hopes of restoring the functionality, but after trying almost every setting I can in Premiere Pro and the 230H, I just can't get audio to export to tape. The video works just fine. If Premiere is set to use 32K audio, the 230H does not even record the video and gives an undocumented error (E-02) message, but works with 48K audio, just no audio. BTW, capture has continued to work.
This combination is pretty much missing from any configuration and setup I can find. Any ideas, drop me a line: tv6 at atu dot edu Thanks.
Reinstall your IEEE in device manager. Go to>start>control panel>system>Hardware>device manager>IEEE bus host controllers (highlight IEEE and hit your delete button on your keyboard) click yes you want to delete. restart your computer and let device manager reinstall your IEEE card.
Thank you so much!!!! I have Adobe Premiere LE, I went to Project | Project Settings | General | Playback Settings |Output and unchecked playback on DV camcorder and vualla I can finally hear sound :)
You just save me hours of agony. THANKS!!!
Thank YOU.
audio settings worked. I've used premiere for like 4 years and never had this happen. my new computer made the non audio settings default. couldn't figure it out. thanks again.
Hi gang,
I'm in the middle of editing a project for a client in Palm Springs (stuck, I don't even live here and have used Premiere for five years now, but haven't been on it for the past few months)..It's 2 am now almost and I left earlier this evening to capture files, came back and only HALF captured the audio out of 40 or so clips?? It only captures audio on live record, not batch record now? I'm completely puzzled and this happened after editing since 10 am?! Any ideas?
Scott/ WOnderlunder
Thanks tons man, my project was almost impossible without previewing the audio. You're awesome, and Google is awesome for finding you for me!!!
I never figured it out, but I have a feeling
it may have to do with some reinstall updates because after I closed my Premierem it said (you need to restart yoru computer for your new reinstall to take place)..
..lol..it's cool that this blog is at the top of google.
hey just tried it and it worked. YOU DA MAN!!!! thanks alot
Marvelous! After half an hour of trying different settings I finally got it to work with the help of this nifty tutorial. You are an Fing Ninja!!! Steve is Smart! YAY!!!
The audio stops capturing after 3 minutes while the video goes on in adeobe premiere what can be the problem
Hi, thanks so much, but now I got a problem with video rendering... I connot use DVSTORM compressor (the checkbox is grayed and select DV (PAL))
Thanks a lot for the solution at the problem above.
Riccardo (Italy)
Cheers for that dude - I'm actually having the opposite problem - audio in the source monitor works when I use the play button but I get nothing when I scrub. (It plays and scrubs ok both in the program monitor and the timeline - weird huh)
I tried changing the DV settings but as I'm using Video for Windows (they are old VHS recordings) I guess it wouldn't make much difference.
If anyone has any thoughts, please drop me a line - colsim(at)bigpond(dot)com
THANK YOU!!!
I almost pulled all of my hair out trying to solve this problem!!! What an easy fix!!!
Thank you Steve! I got so fricken frustrated with Premiere, thank you.
I've been using Premiere Pro 1.5 for over a year now. All of a sudden I am having audio problems. I capture a clip at 48khz with sound during the capture. When finished, if I do a play back I have no sound. If I drag the time line bar back and forth I have sound. I have baffled a good friend with this problem and he does his work on PP 1.5 also. He can't seem to figure it out either.
Any suggestions? You are welcomed to email me
Hello
Just found this page through google and I hope that you could help me. I am also having problems hearing audio in Premiere 2.0 even afer rendering. The only thing is that im not capturing video from a dv camcorder im just importing avi video files (xvid). I still followed the steps that you gave and it is checked off to play audio through audio hardware. Also I dont hear anything when I move the playback head back and forth. What can I do to fix this problem?
You are welcome to email me. Thanks for your time
I'm usually a mac user... i plug in my camera, I hit capture, and iMovie instantly captures all audio and video everytime. So now, I'm trying to help a friend capture to windows 2000. The video is coming in just fine, but NO audio. (Flat line in the audio timeline.) Any ideas ? (I hear it on the camera.) Does the audio come throught the fire wire or do I need the AV out to the analog card ??
I just got PP 2.0 and when I import .avi files I get no sound with them. I read above, but PP 2.0 doesn't have the same settings as described above (at least not on my computer it doesn't).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you kind sir. i cant believe how many people also ran into this issue. very well done.
Thank you. I love you. You should have seen me punching the mattress I was so frustrated over this thing. Haha, you are the absolute man.
Thank you... you the man... I tried everything and then I found this site. Bookmarked, saved, now a first choice reference.
For those who follow these instructions and who get the wrong menu (from your hardware) to change the audio output...
1) Quit Premier Pro
2) Go into Control Panel -> system -> Hardware -> Device Manager
3) Find your hardware video capture device and right click on it and chose "disable". There may be several components to disable.
4) Reboot your computer
5) Start Premier Pro - You'll get a couple of errors that your hardware's not there.
6) Follow the instructions again. This time it will work and you'll get the right menu.
7) Quit Premier Pro.
8) Go back into the Device manager and enable all components of your hardware.
10) Reboot again.
11) You're done.
12) Ironically you only have to do this once and you get the right menu from then on.
If you want to tell me if this worked for you - remove "removethis-" from my email address
Thank you so much! Brilliant advice! All sorted now! Am well chuffed.
Ben
I have premeire 2.0... no audio after rendering.. need help... my settings do not look like the ones mentioned above..please help
Legend. My Premiere 6.0 suddenly stopped playback (it has been fine previously) and I couldn't work it out! You have saved me much time, I really appreciate your article. It came up in the first couple of hits in Google. Cheers!
hey i was wondering why is it when i play my sequence in premiere pro everything sounds fine but after i save it as a movie file the audio sounds all like static help please!
Excellent site.
Using Premier 6, hit exactly the problem of no Audio in project window, although the audio files worked fine in source.
Did as suggested and disabled my dv hardware under settings/control panel/system/hardware/device manager/...(then had to search for them)... found them under sound, video and game controllers
I am using Pinnacle DV. Disabled DV500 E4 and DV500 Overlay.
Rebooted pc. Rebooted Premier.
Run project and "lo and behold" the audio ran first time... no need to change any settings... It just works!!!
well done to all the posters here. Its now 9.30pm and I have just finished my days work and am going to reward myself with a Gin/Tonic.. cheers!!!
Thanks a million for this the help files were useless
If you have a external or Hardware driven video card your sound output from the timeline is going to go through your Video Hardware Device. You must loop out of the sound from this Video device back into your audio card line input. Anything you view through the preview window in Premiere will play throungh to your desktop speakers. Be sure your ASIO settings are correct under premiere pro Edit preferences > audio hardware.
I read everything from top to bottom and finally the instruction David posted on Sept. 19 07 worked for me. Here is some details to his wonderful instructions:
Edit->Preference->Audio
Select "Audio Hardware"
Do you see your speakers listed there? Probably not, so click on "ASIO Settings". Now you see your speakers, select them and deselect any other speaker which may not exist in your computer (that was the case for me).
Good luck.
(Thanks to all who kindly posted their helpful experiences and more than all to David)
Under File...Go to Edit menu...Preferences...Audio Hardware...ASIO Settings.
Out of 3 devices, only 1 was checked. I checked the other 2 boxes as well, and Presto! My playback worked!!!!!
Can anyone please email a suggestion as to why....
On premier pro cs3 which ive just installed on my new windows vista laptop... i cannot export to tape. every time i either play manually the timeline into my camera through dv firewire, or if i use the export to tape sitting... it intermitently cuts out signal to the camera. its fine on the edit window - just drop connects into the camera. have tried different camera & lead.
help! cheers
Thanks! Thanks! THANKS!!!
I was going crazy for the last hour.
Your solution was the key. Maximum Kudos to you!
