When people talk about of the characteristics of DV filmmaking, the "look" as it were, they usually discuss things like interlaced versus progressive and 24p frame rates all as a way of approaching a "film look" for video footage.
And while those factors do contribute to the finished look of a DVfilm, depth-of-field also contributes. Basically, the DOF from DV cameras is never going to duplicate the DOF from 16mm or 35mm film cameras because the target size (the size of the film frame or the size of the CCD in the DV camera) is so different.
In an effort to achieve the sort of DOF found in film cameras, this article walks you through the steps of building your own depth-of-field machine.
