I try to make it a habit to visit Apple's Pro pages from time to time, not only because I suffer from a severe case of Apple techno lust, but because there are some really good stories buried in there under all the glaring Apple product promotions. Typically featured are artists, musicians, filmmakers and more who are out there doing really cool, creative things with Apple tools.
My usual reaction when reading a lot of these stories is, "I soooo need to get off my ass and shake something loose ." That was never more true when I read this Pro article yesterday about the making of the movie Able Edwards, a bizarre sci-fi epic shot with no sets on greenscreen with a Canon XL-1 and a budget of $30,000. Sort of a low budget Sky Captain? Totally different plot, of course, but same basic production technique.
Another good one I read recently is this account of the making of Broadway: The Golden Era. I like how filmmaker Rick McKay describes using his tiny apartment as his studio to film interviews with Broadway legends:
My living room turned into my production set, and 50 stars came through here — Alec Baldwin, Chita Rivera, Hume Cronyn,” says McKay. “They’d look both ways, like ‘What the hell am I doing in someone’s apartment?’ The secret was to get them body-miked fast, before they could figure it out and leave.
There's a certain passion that shows through in his story as he basically made this film for no money and at one point he had to sell his prized piano to pay the bills.
