Ok, so it's now official, I am definitely excited about the upcoming release of Macromedia's Studio 8. Among all the new features in the suite, the single most exciting thing I'm looking forward to is the expanded role that video will have.
Video presented inside of Flash has been exploding on the web as of late and we are putting together various proofs-of-concept at work to explore transitioning to Flash video as a platform for on-demand video.
I installed the Flash Player 8 Beta a few weeks ago and have been busy checking out all the amazing work going on. This example here from Macromedia is an amazing use of video (with embedded alpha channels!) with pseudo-3d parallax. (click the Launch button)
A lot of talk is going on about Macromedia switching to the VP6 codec from On2. Here's Tinic Uro (Principal Engineer on the Macromedia Flash Player) with more on the decision making process behind this switch.
UPDATE: Studio 8 Evangelist Greg Rewis gives us a look at the new Video Import Wizard. The custom video player skins alone are worth the price of admission.
But when is it going to be out? Pre-order bah humbug...Macromedia take a leaf out of apple's book and launch it when you announce it.
