I know that it's way too early to know if Skype will be a shrinking violet in the face of Google showing up on their playground, (I doubt they will)
but...
I did just read on the Skype blog that today (same day as Google's announcement of Talk) they're announcing two new products: SkypeWeb and SkypeNet.
SkypeWeb allows you to add a bit of HTML to your site/blog that will display your current Skype status. In other words "I'm online and I'm available for a call" or "I'm online, but too busy to talk please call later." The Skype article makes an interesting point about status being one of many things that is missing from standard land lines. Your phone is just hanging there in the kitchen and friends will call without knowing if this a good time for you or not.
SkypeNet is an API for developers who wish to add Skype functionality to their applications.
Things are really going to be interesting in the world of chat/VoIP clients going forward as Google announces new features to Talk.
