So, the 78th Annual Academy Awards Nominations were announced this week and I was just reading the list over again and a few things popped into mind.
First, I've not seen even half of the nominated films, but I'm feeling the vibe that Reese Witherspoon will win for Walk the Line, but I'm doubting that costar Joaquin Phoenix will also win. Not that I didn't love his performance, he rocked the house, but it seems like Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a bit more momentum going at this point.
Second, I'm glad to see Terrance Howard get a moment. Granted, I never saw Hustle & Flow, but I know that he got singled out a lot in the reviews for that film and I'm always glad to see nominations go to deserving films that came out earlier in the year than the "oscar season."
Third, Pixar's newest short film "One Man Band" is nominated in Animated Short category. This is cool, and I'm really looking forward to "Cars" so I can see both of these.
Fourth, John Williams had a really busy 2005! In addition to his two Oscar noms for Munich and Memoirs of a Geisha, he also worked on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, War of the Worlds and Revenge of the Sith. He's the 2nd most nominated film composer ever, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that he's the most nominated living person in any category, beyond even Meryl Streep. (37 vs. 13, according to Wikipedia)
Sith... er, rather... fifth, why no Visual Effects nomination for Revenge of the Sith? Is it further proof that the academy hates George Lucas? I just rewatched Sith this week and that movie is an acheivement in VFX. I know King Kong had the buzz factor going into the holidays, but really... parts of Kong (from an effects perspective) felt a bit rushed and not quite finished.
Terrance Howard's IMDB link is http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005024/ ;)
Thanks for the catch. Got it fixed.
