I read through Wil Wheaton's thoughts following Sunday night's Oscar telecast and I share quite a few opinions.
I too was really irked that they cutoff some of the winner's speeches; most notably at the very end during the award for best picture. We never got a chance to hear what Paul Haggis had to say. And, speaking of speeches, this is the first Oscar show where I noticed that they were playing music softly under each of the acceptance speeches. Not sure what I think about this, it was sort of odd. It tended to give even the most bland of speeches an air of self-importance. I would vote for not having this any more on future shows Mr. Cates.
I totally agree with Wil's thoughts on the montage of great films that have touched on notable social issues and the inclusion of The Day After Tomorrow. Right away I thought "What!?"
Was it just me, or was there a definite anti-DVD vibe in a lot of the speeches and scripted category intros? I wonder if Hollywood is just a bit too worried about loosing theater revenue to the DVD market? Or perhaps they're sending a message to Steven Soderbergh?
In other snarky news, the Gotamist had a nice live blog session going during the Oscars.
