Bruce Springsteen releases his new album today, We Shall Overcome: the Seeger Sessions.
Talking to an AP reporter following a rehersal with his new Seeger Sesssions Band, Bruce had this to say about his fan's reaction to his musical directions:
Your job as an artist is to build a box, and then let people watch you escape from it. And then they follow you to the next box, and they watch you escape from that one. Escape artistry is part of the survival mechanism of the job. If you want to do the job well, you have got to be able to escape from what you've previously built.
I think in that quote, Bruce really captures what it is I love and respect about him. While he always plays his music and performs his concerts with a great roaring intensity, he has not been afraid to let his sound evolve and meander over the years. He's certainly not been an artist who's content to simply lay back and become a greatest hit show. Regardless of whatever musical motif he's playing in the moment, Bruce always brings a resonance of truth to the project, whether it be acoustic folk songs, socially-aware ballads, or old-school rock.
