Over the summer a new theater opened near us and as a promotional tool they featured some free movie days for kids. One of the films featured was Curious George. I took my 4-year-old-son to it and we really loved it.
But, the film didn't do great business at the box office and faded pretty quickly. Most parents I talked to weren't really aware of the film, or if they were they didn't really have much interest in seeing it. Which is a shame since I found the film really great and well made. It was very light on it's feet and whimsical without a lot of cynical inside pop culture riffs that most if not all films from a certain studio resort to. (I'm talking about you Dreamworks!)
No, Curious George really felt like something from an earlier time, albeit a time with really nice computer assisted animation tools readily available. This movie really played like the storybook came to life, which I know is a bit of a cliche, but in this case it's true. The color palette and in fact the entire design of this film was really quite fetching.
(If you're interested, Curious George is out today on DVD)
